Why pursue a degree in Astronomy?
Why pursue a degree in Astronomy?
Because you love the sky! You want to understand how and why the Universe works. The astronomy degree offers the chance to study some of the biggest and most awe-inspiring questions in the Universe.
However, a degree in astronomy is not just about the sky. Modern astronomy is really a branch of physics. To pursue a degree in astronomy, you will be taking courses that are heavily focussed on physics and mathematics, applying them in the context of astronomy, and picking up skills on coding and statistics along the way. In other words, you will be developing a set of skills that are broadly applicable, all while having fun!
Our program places a high premium on developing your problem-solving skills. From homework assignments to in-class presentations, from lab reports to independent research projects, our rigorous program produces students that can take on a wide range of real-world problems.
A research career in astronomy or other related fields (physics, engineering…) is a common path (often requiring a PhD). The strong quantitative skills of our graduates also open doors to many industries. These include data sciences, software development, finance, education, aerospace, science journalism, just to name a few.
