Understanding our Programs
Introduction
Our department offers students the opportunity to explore the universe through rigorous academic training and hands-on research experience. We provide three distinct program levels designed to accommodate different academic goals and career aspirations, from complementary studies to intensive preparation for graduate studies and careers in research.
What is a Program?
A program (formerly called Subject POSt) refers to the different academic programs you can enrol in at the University of Toronto. Every program consists of a different series of courses designed to provide you with different levels of expertise in your chosen field. For students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Science, you must be enrolled in at least one program and complete one of the following minimum program combinations:
- • One specialist
- • Two majors
- • One major and two minors
Programs:
Specialist in Astronomy & Astrophysics
The specialist program offers the most extensive and rigorous training in astronomy and astrophysics, combining deep astronomical study with intensive physics coursework. This program is designed for students committed to pursuing careers in astronomical research. In fourth year, you will engage in supervised, forefront research projects in astronomy, working directly with faculty on cutting-edge astrophysical problems. The specialist program provides optimal preparation for graduate studies in astronomy and astrophysics or for professional research positions in observatories, space agencies, or academic institutions.
Major in Astronomy & Astrophysics
The major program provides comprehensive training in astronomy and astrophysics, building upon foundational coursework with advanced astronomical theory and an introduction to astrophysical research. This program is complemented by electives in advanced mathematics, physics, or numerical methods that support sophisticated astronomical analysis. The major prepares you for graduate studies in astronomy or careers requiring strong research and analytical skills in observational or theoretical astrophysics.
Minor in Astronomy & Astrophysics
The minor program offers an insightful and essential foray into astronomy and is designed to complement other programs. This program provides students with a fundamental understanding of astronomical phenomena, observational techniques, and the physical principles governing celestial objects. The minor is an excellent addition for students with majors in physics, mathematics, computer science, or statistics.
