The University of Toronto invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in the area of near field cosmology with an expected start date of September 1, 2023.  The successful applicant will collaborate with Profs. Ting Li and Jo Bovy and members of their groups on projects of common interest in the field of near-field cosmology, including galactic archaeology and dynamics. Topics of interest include the Milky Way’s stellar halo, nearby dwarf galaxies, stellar streams, the formation and (dynamical) evolution of the galactic disk and bar, and astrophysical constraints on the nature of dark matter. The successful applicant will be expected to lead new, data-driven projects using data from large surveys and to be interested in working with students and other postdoctoral associates.

 

The successful applicant will be able to participate in SDSS-V, the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Experiment (DESI), the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5), the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey (DELVE), and LSST. Other resources include access to many optical telescopes through the Canadian TAC, including the 4-meter Canada France Hawaii Telescope and the two 8-meter Gemini Telescopes, and to high-performance computing through SciNet.

 

The initial appointment will be for two years; depending on performance, a one-year extension is possible. 

 

Salary: The position comes with a competitive annual starting salary of $70,000, commensurate with qualifications, plus benefits, relocation assistance, and a research allowance. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in working with large-survey data is highly desirable.
