In the life track of the star, the short vertical part reflects the slow change during the main sequence.
When Hydrogen is exhausted in the star, the core starts to contract. Again, the question is whether He fusion can ignite. For a low-mass star this is not the case: an inert He core forms, with Hydrogen fusion around it.
