Oosterhoff (1941) pointed out that the variable was the first star to the left (i.e. east) of the star that Bailey labelled as V14 on his chart. The star that Bailey labelled as V14 is star #II-51 (Arp 1955). Evstigneeva et al. (1995) derived its J2000 position (RA = 15:18:22.596, dec = +2:06:40.09) because Osborn (1971) classified it as a suspected variable. Its variablility has not yet been confirmed in any subsequent study. V39: Sandquist et al. (1996) pointed out that the y coordinate for this star was incorrectly listed in Sawyer Hogg's second (1955) and third (1973) catalogues. Two digits were inadvertently exchanged; y should be -250.2 arcseconds. V104: This is the same star as HST-V1 of Drissen & Shara (1998) who tentatively classified it as an eclipsing binary. However, Caputo et al. (1999) noted that more observations were required before a firm classification could be made. Olech et al. (1999) had more extensive data and concluded that it is a multi-periodic RR1 variable that exhibits non-radial pulsation. V122: This is HST-V23 of Drissen & Shara (1998) who determined a lower limit to the period: P=0.47 days. No other period determination has been made for this star. V155: This star was originally classified as RR Lyrae by Drissen & Shara (1998) but Arellano Ferro et al. (2015) showed that it was more likely an eclipsing binary. The period, magnitude and classification in the above table are from Arellano et al. (2015). V158: Although the 0.45 day period seems long for an RR1 classification, this has been made because of its light curve shape and the fact that it is brighter than the other RR1 variables in the study by Drissen & Shara (1998). V158 shares these properties with M5:V76 and M3:V70. ==================================================================== Discovery of the variable stars in M5 V1-92 Bailey (1902) with x,y positions on page 239-240 and an ID chart (Plate VIII, Fig 2, caption on page 248-249) In a later paper devoted entirely to M5, Bailey (1917) gave a good description of the early work on the variables in M5. He also noted that the variability of V22, V23, V25, V46, V48, V49, V51, V53 was doubtful. Oosterhoff (1941) later confirmed that V22, V23, V46, V48, V49 were non-variable and that the variability of V51 was uncertain, but classified V25 and V53 as variables. V93-103 Oosterhoff (1941) with x,y positions in Table 3 and ID chart (Plate I) V104-114 Kadla et al. (1987) and summarized in English by Gerashchenko (1987) with x,y positions V115-131 = variables 1, 2, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19-27 Kravtsov (1988) with ID chart and 1950 RA and dec. The numbers V115-131 were later assigned by Kravtsov (1991). A total of 27 variables were announced by Kravtsov (1988), but #18, 17, 14, 13, 7, 6, 10, 3, 4 and 5 were the same as Kadla's V105-114. V132-133 Kravtsov (1991) with ID chart, x,y coordinates and 1950 RA and dec V134-141 Sandquist et al. (1996) with x,y coordinates It was later shown by Caputo et al. (1999) that V134 was the same star as V129. Apparently Sandquist et al. did not realize this because the y coordinate they listed for V129 was incorrect. Also, according to Samus et al. (2009), V135 is the same star as V36. Arellano Ferro et al. (2015) did not detect any variability in V136, V138 or V140. They also pointed out that there was a typo in the RA listed for V140 in an earlier version of this catalogue. V142-143 = V123, V116 Brocato et al. (1996) with ID chart. The numbers V142 and V143 were assigned later by Caputo et al. (1999) because the numbers V116 and V123 had been previously assigned to other variables by Kravtsov (1988). Brocato et al. announced more than 20 other "new" variables, but the majority of these had already been discovered by other authors. Caputo et al. (1999 - Table 1) published a table with cross-identifcations for these stars. Caputo et al. also published ID charts for all of V104-144, with the exception of V133 and V141, which were outside their field of view. V144-148 = star #596, 629, 648, 651, 652 Reid (1996) with pixel numbers and ID charts (#596 in quadrant #3 and the others in quadrant #4). The numbers V144-148 were assigned by Caputo et al. (1999) Caputo et al. questioned the variability of V144 (#596) and Kaluzny et al. (1999) stated that the other four variables were all spurious detections. This result was subsequently confirmed by Arellano Ferro et al. (2015) who did not detect variability in any of these stars. Reid published an errata for his paper because some of the previously known RR Lyrae variables were incorrectly identified. V149-154 = V1-6 Yan & Reid (1996) with an ID chart and x,y coordinates. The numbers V149-154 were assigned by Caputo et al. (1999). Kaluzny et al. (1999) stated that these variables were all spurious detections. This result was subsequently confirmed by Arellano Ferro et al. (2015) who did not detect variability in any of these stars. V155-159 = HST-V6, V15, V16, V19, V28 Drissen & Shara (1998) with RA & dec and an ID chart The numbers 155-159 were assigned by Caputo et al. (1999). Drissen & Shara recovered 24 additional variables in their study, all of which were previously discovered. Table 1 of Caputo et al. (1999) lists cross-references for the variables V104 to V159. V160-163 Olech et al. (1999) with x,y coordinates and ID charts V164-168 = NV1-5 Kaluzny et al. (1999) RA, dec and ID charts The numbers V164-168 were assigned in our on-line catalogue (Clement et al. 2001) V169 = Zhukov 963 Rees (1993) noted that Zhukov 963 was probably variable and Kaluzny et al. (2000) confirmed this. The number V169 was assigned in our on-line catalogue (Clement et al. 2001). V170-181 Arellano Ferro et al. (2015) with RA, dec and ID charts PSR-M5A and PSR-M5B = PSR B1516+02A and PSR B1516+02B The data above are from Freire et al. (2008). The discovery was originally announced by Wolszczan et a. (1989). M5B is in a binary system with orbital period = 6.86 days PSR-M5C, PSR-M5D, PSR-M5E = PSR J1518+0204C, PSR J1518+0204D, PSR J1518=0204E, millisecond pulsars in binary systems Hessels et al. (2007) who derived orbital periods of 2.08, 29.3 and 26.3 hr. respectively for M5C, M5D and M5E. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pietrukowicz et al. (2008) searched for dwarf novae in M5 and easily detected V101. Their observations covered 34 nights in the years 1997-1999 and 2002-2004. No new erupting objects were found in the field of M5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Raney et al. (2014) are undertaking an automated search for RR Lyrae variables in M5 using data from the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kraemer et al. (2013) announced that they are making optical and near-infrared observations in order to identify the long period variables on the AGB. ======================================================================== References Arellano Ferro, A., Bramich, D.
