Course Number and Title: AST201H1 S Stars and Galaxies
Course description: This course will explain how astronomers develop methods for determining the properties of remote stars and galaxies, including their life histories. We will study the Big Bang theory for the origin of the universe and examine the processes by which the universe evolved from a state of remarkable simplicity and uniformity, as described by the Big Bang theory, into its present highly complex state as evidenced by what we can see and hope to see in the universe around us.
Estimated course enrolment: 196 students
Estimated TA support: 280 hours
Sessional dates: July 1, 2017 – August 31, 2017 for S courses
Salary: Sessional Lecturer I rate of pay will be $7,359.07 (inclusive of vacation pay), Sessional Lecturer I long term rate of pay will be $7,498.50 (inclusive of vacation pay), for a Half (F/S) course. The Sessional Lecturer II rate of pay will be $7,823.85 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Half (F/S) course. The Sessional Lecturer III rate of pay will be $8,185.35 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Half (F/S) course.
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Qualifications: PhD or equivalent training in Astronomy, with experience in teaching university courses in astronomy required; teaching excellence, strong academic record, and mastery of subject area; previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable.
Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, test and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs assigned to course.
