What have we learned from gravitational wave detections?

In less than five years, the field of gravitational wave astronomy has grown from a groundbreaking first discovery to revealing new populations of stellar remnants through distant cosmic collisions. I’ll summarize recent results from LIGO-Virgo and their wide-reaching implications, give an overview of the instrumentation of the current Advanced LIGO detectors, and discuss prospects for the future of multi-messenger astrophysics with gravitational waves.
