The following positions for Sessional Lecturers are available in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics: St. George Campus for the 2011 summer academic session. This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement between The Governing Council, University of Toronto, and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 (Unit 3). In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department’s Applicant Pool. All pool members who wish to be considered for a particular position must submit the following items:

Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the Sessional Lecturer I rate of pay will be $13,790 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Full (Y) course and $6,895 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Half (F/S) course. The Sessional Lecturer I Long Term rate of pay will be $14,050 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Full (Y) course and $7,025 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Half (F/S) course. The Sessional Lecturer II rate of pay will be $14,690 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Full (Y) course and $7,345 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Half (F/S) course. The Sessional Lecturer III rate of pay will be $15,340 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Full (Y) course and $7,670 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a Half (F/S) course.
Sessional Dates (including examination periods): 1 May 2011 – 30 June 2011 for F courses; 1 July 2011 – 31 August 2011 for S courses. Notes: (1) A valid e-mail address is required of all applicants. Preference in hiring will be given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer or Sessional Lecturer III by the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics. |

AST201H1 F: Stars and Galaxies This course will explain how astronomers develop methods for determining the properties of remote stars and galaxies, including their life histories. We will study the Big Bang theory for the origin of the universe and examine the processes by which the universe evolved from a state of remarkable simplicity and uniformity, as described by the Big Bang theory, into its present highly complex state as evidenced by what we can see and hope to see in the universe around us.
AST210H1 S: Great Moments in Astronomy Beginning with the Copernican Revolution, the course traces the thread of progress in astronomy and astrophysics to its present state. Emphasis is placed on understanding the process of discovery which has led to the major advances in knowledge about the Universe. Astronomical concepts are explained where necessary, so that no previous knowledge of astronomy is essential. |

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, test and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs assigned to course. |
PhD in Astronomy, with experience in teaching university courses in astronomy required; strong academic record, and mastery of subject area; demonstrated strong record of undergraduate teaching preferred; strong academic record, and mastery of subject area; previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable |
