UPDATE: On 1997 June 30, UTSO ceased operating due to lack of funds. An agreement was subsequently made with the Argentine observatory at El Leoncito to move the telescope, operate it, and maintain it, reserving 25% of the time for the University of Toronto. The instrument retained its name, Helen Sawyer Hogg Telescope (HSHT), as a continuing tribute to one of Canada's best-known astronomers.

The University of Toronto Southern Observatory (UTSO) operated the 60-cm Helen Sawyer Hogg Telescope (HSHT) in the foothills of the Andes mountains in north-central Chile. No other site on Earth offers better skies for astronomical research.

UTSO was open to all professional astonomers, regardless of institutional affiliation or national origin. It was used by astronomers from all over the world.

UTSO 25th ANNIVERSARY
The David Dunlap Observatory hosted an informal workshop to celebrate 25 years of operation at UTSO 1996 September 6-7. Click to view a photograph.

UTSO was operated in part by David Dunlap Observatory endowment funds, and in part with funds made available by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council. UTSO was a research facility of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (then known as the Department of Astronomy) at the University of Toronto.
